A train ride through Sri Lanka's hill country is one of the most iconic travel experiences in Asia. Built during the colonial tea era, the railway still winds through mountains, plantations, waterfalls, and old station towns, offering an unforgettable view of the island's central highlands.

The Kandy to Ella train route is the most famous journey and remains one of the top things to do in Sri Lanka. Along the way, travellers pass through tea estates, forested hills, mist-covered valleys, and local villages that give the trip its charm and authenticity.

After Peradeniya Junction, the scenery begins to change quickly as the train climbs higher into the mountains. The route through Kadugannawa and toward Nuwara Eliya reveals a landscape shaped by tea cultivation, cool weather, and dramatic elevation changes.

Nanu Oya is the gateway to Nuwara Eliya, a hill town known for colonial architecture, flower gardens, and cool temperatures. Many travellers choose to stop here to explore tea factories, Horton Plains, and the surrounding highland scenery before continuing onward.

The section from Haputale to Ella is especially photogenic. Bridges, tunnels, steep drops, and endless green hills make this stretch one of the most scenic train rides in Sri Lanka and a favourite among photographers and content creators.

If you want the full experience, second or third class is usually best because you can open the windows and enjoy the views and fresh mountain air. The social atmosphere on board also adds to the journey, making it feel more local and memorable.

To get the best train seats in Sri Lanka, book early and aim for a reserved seat during peak season. If you are travelling from Kandy to Ella, the right side often offers better mountain views, especially as the train climbs through the hill country.

Bring a light jacket, snacks, and a camera, and allow yourself to slow down. This is not just transport — it is one of the most beautiful ways to see Sri Lanka's tea country, mountains, and rural life.
